Well, don't expect too much from the boss. In reality, there's few (if not no) GM / CEO / CIO is able to be an experienced ERP user. The feasible solution is to find a champion who is an ERP expert (or experienced user at last) and is devoted most of their time and energy in the ERP project. At the same time, this champion must be a good communicator who is able to use simple languages to help the boss to make right decisions and gain their support, Senior management support is a must in a successful ERP implementation project after all. Besides, this champion must be extremely familiar with his company and their products and processes. In other words, the champion is able to objectively make an objective SWOT analysis for their company. This way, the champion on behand of the company will be capable of making an elaborate preparation (including establishing a database of the foundamental master data, establish some necessary process standardization or BPM,etc) for the ERP project while helping establish a feasible objective for the project. Furthermore, only this champion can be an effective interface between the ERP software provider and the company so that in-depth user trainings are fruitful as expected. To summarize, with such a champion can the company exert a firm control over the processes of the ERP project instead of letting the ERP software provider to be the actual decision maker.
